History Today: Jack the Ripper Claims First Victim


Prostitute Mary Ann Nichols became the first victim of the serial killer Jack the Ripper in London, on August 31, 1888. His body was found mutilated in Whitechapel. In the East End of London, a similar murder happened four more in the next few months. But no suspects were ever arrested. As reported by History.com, at that time the police do not have a modern forensic techniques such as fingerprints and blood. Dozens of letters allegedly written assassin sent to the police station. Most considered fraudulent. However, two letters written by the individual offending crime known only to the police and the killer. These letters were signed by the sender's name "Jack the Ripper". This gave rise to the nickname for the killer. On November 7, Jack killed a fifth victim. Again a prostitute named Mary Kelly, this time coming from Ireland. Kelly corpses of all the victims found in the most horrific conditions. In 1892, no longer found records of murder. It makes a case of Jack the Ripper is closed.
