History Today: First African-American Astronauts to Space


Lieutenant Colonel United States Air Force Guion S. Bluford became the first African-American to travel into space. At that time he rode the space shuttle Challenger on the third mission. As reported by History.com, the launch is done at night. Many people witnessed the launch until late at night, when the spacecraft blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on August 30, 1983 at 02:32 local time. Challenger spent six days in space / Bulford and four crew members launched a communications satellite for India's authority, making contact with other satellites, and conduct scientific experiments and to test the plane's robotic arm. Before dawn on Sept. 5, the plane returned to land at Edwards Air Force Base in California. They ended the most perfect space shuttle mission at the time.
