Google doodle today: Chile National Day 2016

It was on this day in 1810 that Chile began its long fight for independence from Spain. While official independence didn't come until 1818, Chileans celebrate the beginning of this journey, when the country declared its intention to rule itself. The celebrations of El Dieciocho take many forms, but the early springtime makes it an ideal time to gather outside and enjoy the weather, fly kites, and eat Chilean foods such as empanadas and alfajores. While traditions like dancing cueca form the heart of las Fiestas Patrias, the most important aspect is that Chileans gather together today to celebrate the country's independence and reflect on the national spirit of Chile. The escarapela on today's doodle showcases Chile's national colors, which were adopted during the struggle for independence. Before this time, Chilean military and official buildings displayed Spain's national colors instead. In addition to the many Chilean flags displayed on public buildings around the country, many display the escarapela to show their pride in Chile's independence. ¡Feliz Dieciocho! *** Name of doodle: Chile National Day 2016 This doodle was shown: 18.09.2016 Countries, in which doodle was shown: Chile Link to doodle image: http://ift.tt/2cmfvjh
